Does anyone want to have a serious and constructive conversation about Shädman and the change in his art since the beginning of the year? Because I’m sure that even you guys could do that. To open, I’m going to start with a joke I heard, to lighten the mood.

Okay, now that’s out of the way, let’s get started.
Shadman has never been the best artist, and, honestly, he still doesn’t have very good art skills. He has locked himseld into one simplistic art style and doesn’t seem brave enough to try something else. He has stagnated. It’s obvious, looking at his work from years gone past, that he has progressed, but it hasn’t been a very big progression. The only reasons, in my non-professional opinion, that he has grown so popular is his time as a porn artist, are:
1. He draws what others are not willing to draw; the taboo; the lolicon and shotacon and beastiality and everything else. He has taken over a niche others weren’t willing to fill, and he does it just well enough to get enough recognition to do this as a job.
2. He has a very cutesy style. To paraphrase the book An Animator’s Survival Guide: his style is artsy-crafty, artsy-fartsy, and that’s a bad thing, but people seem to like it. So he prevails.
3. He got very lucky with his work. The vast majority of artists, even ones with skill and talent leagues ahead of Shädman, don’t recieve this much attention. Luck is by far the biggest factor in his success.
So, does anyone care to carry on this conversation? I’ve not made any real arguments, but I’ve put enough out here for people to work with. I, personally, don’t care much to argue, but it’d be a lovely thing to see this comment section so oft-filled with hate and “autism” inspire some real critical thought and well-made arguments.
I would agree that technically and stylistically, the Shädfather has been stagnant for a while now; save for his occasional stint into “vaporwave/lo-fi”. Personally though, I don’t see this as a problem, as he fills a niche. His style can come across as “cute” in many pieces; but I think the main thing to point out is that you can always point out a Shädman work from the crowd. He is distinct.
The man makes things that others are not willing to do: not many are willing to put their name behind such an extensive loli portfolio. Shäd is a cultural embodiment of taboo made devilishly tasteful.
Let us also not forget though, his early days on Newgrounds; the reason why I think luck does not necessarily equate into his success. He is established amongst the old-schoolers: a time-tested veteran of the online smut art community. Anyone who can cause such division in opinion can easily gain renown online.
TLDR: Shäd creates what many secretly crave; and what more vehemently despise. With the culture war constantly raging below him; Shädman can continue to put whatever effort he desires into whatever projects he wishes: they will always come/cum.
By no means am I completely agreeing with you but at the same time I’m not disagreeing with you. By no means is his work bad. But like you said there are far better (at least in my opinion) artist that are leagues ahead of him but don t get half the fame shad does and like you state it’s cause he s willing to touch the stuff that no one else is (shota, loli, ete) by no means is that bad but to me I don’t think it should be pumped out as much as it is.
